Stereology: a bridge to a better understanding of lung structure and function.

چکیده
U nlike solid organs, the lung is a hollow organ that contains, under physiological conditions, an amount of air that is much larger than the total amount of its tissue. This confers to the lung a degree of heterogeneity that is much larger than in any other organ and adds difficulties to the interpretation of physiological measurements, which are in most cases related to the whole system. To overcome these difficulties and to construct suitable models for lung function, a number of studies on the relationships between structure and function have been performed over the last five decades. The major problem in relating lung function measurements to morphological data is the need to gather information on a three-dimensional (3D) structure from two-dimensional (2D) observations. Although data from simple 2D images have been widely used to describe pathological changes in lung parenchyma or airways, their relevance to physiological events occurring in 3D structures is limited.

Quasi-Static Transient Thermal Stresses in an Elliptical Plate due to Sectional Heat Supply on the Curved Surfaces over the Upper Face
This paper is an attempt to determine quasi-static thermal stresses in a thin elliptical plate which is subjected to transient temperature on the top face with zero temperature on the lower face and the homogeneous boundary condition of the third kind on the fixed elliptical curved surface. The solution to conductivity equation is elucidated by employing a classical method. The solution of stre...
متن کاملHow much is there really? Why stereology is essential in lung morphometry.
Quantitative data on lung structure are essential to set up structure-function models for assessing the functional performance of the lung or to make statistically valid comparisons in experimental morphology, physiology, or pathology. The methods of choice for microscopy-based lung morphometry are those of stereology, the science of quantitative characterization of irregular three-dimensional ...
متن کاملTypology of the "Internal Form-Structure" Drawing upon Argan's Formal Approach (Case Study: Historical Bridge-Caravanserai in Iran)
In the process of defining the nature of architecture, three elements recur which are indispensable components of architecture: type, function, and structure. The three can be related to the three attributes produced by Vitruvius, i.e. strength, utility, and beauty. The findings of contemporary research on the discourse of typology indicate numerous contradictions between various definitions ...

متن کاملA Conceptual Model on Relationship between Structure and Functions in Rangeland Ecosystems
One of the most important issues in structure-function relationship modeling is that each rangeland has numerous functions and each of them can provide the most benefits in a certain state of that ecosystem. In fact, relationship between structure and function can be varied in different states. After presentation of the Linear Structure-Function Model based on the Clementsian succession theory,...
